Robert “Bob” Franklin Hayes spent more than 35 years at Tennessee Steel, where he was known as a skilled mechanic, a dependable supervisor, and a steady presence on the plant floor. Bob joined the company in 1965, shortly after completing his service in the U.S. Army. He began in maintenance, learning the machinery inside and out, and eventually became a shift supervisor. He took particular pride in keeping equipment running safely and teaching younger workers how to do a job correctly.

Bob was respected for his patience and practical nature. He rarely raised his voice and was always willing to lend a hand, whether someone needed help with a difficult repair or simply wanted advice. Over the years, he helped train generations of Tennessee Steel employees. Away from work, Bob volunteered with local youth baseball and was the neighbor people called when a lawn mower would not start or a porch needed fixing.

Bob and his wife, Linda, were married for 52 years and raised two children, Michael and Susan. He was a proud grandfather to Emily, Jacob, and Claire. His favorite weekends were spent fishing, working in his vegetable garden, watching Tennessee football, and having Sunday dinner with his family.

Those who worked beside Bob remember more than his knowledge of steelmaking and machinery. They remember his reliability, dry sense of humor, and belief that everyone deserved to be treated with respect. His contribution to Tennessee Steel lives on in the people he trained, the friendships he built, and the example he set through decades of hard work.
