Walter Eugene “Gene” Mercer spent nearly six decades working with industrial machinery, including more than 50 years at Tennessee Steel. He joined the company as a young maintenance technician in 1962 and gradually became one of the most knowledgeable people in the plant. Gene had an exceptional ability to understand mechanical problems. When a difficult piece of equipment stopped working and the cause was not obvious, coworkers often said, “Go find Gene.”

Although Gene reached retirement age, he had little interest in leaving the work he enjoyed. He reduced his hours but continued coming to the plant as a senior technician and mentor. Tennessee Steel relied on his knowledge of older machinery as well as his ability to work with newer systems. Gene continued working until he was 80, spending his final years helping troubleshoot difficult problems and passing decades of practical knowledge to younger technicians. He took particular pride in teaching people not simply how to make a repair, but how to understand why something had failed.

Away from the plant, Gene shared more than 55 years of marriage with his wife, Margaret. They raised two daughters, Patricia and Ellen, and Gene became a proud grandfather of four. He enjoyed restoring old tractors, listening to country and bluegrass music, tending tomatoes in his backyard, and taking his grandchildren to breakfast on Saturday mornings. Even at home, there was usually something on his workbench waiting to be repaired.

Gene passed away at 84, a few years after finally retiring from Tennessee Steel. His legacy remained especially strong among the maintenance crews and technicians he trained. Many remembered him as the finest technician they had worked with, but Gene himself preferred a simpler description: he was someone who liked solving problems and helping people. His patience, experience, and willingness to share what he knew made him an important part of Tennessee Steel for generations.
