Dwight David “Ike” Eisenhower (October 14, 1890–March 28, 1969) served as the 34th president of the United States from 1953 to 1961. Born in Denison, Texas, and raised in Abilene, Kansas, he graduated from West Point in 1915. He married Mamie Doud in 1916; they had two sons, Doud Dwight and John. The loss of their first child in 1921 was a lasting family sorrow.

During World War II, Eisenhower led Allied operations in North Africa and, as Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force, directed the Normandy invasion on June 6, 1944. After the war he served as Army Chief of Staff, president of Columbia University, and NATO’s first Supreme Allied Commander Europe.

Elected president in 1952 and reelected in 1956, he governed during the Cold War. His administration helped bring about the Korean armistice, advanced the Interstate Highway System, and established NASA. He sent federal troops to enforce school desegregation in Little Rock in 1957. His presidency also included controversial covert interventions abroad and discrimination against gay federal employees.

In retirement at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, he enjoyed family, painting, and farm life. He died in Washington, D.C., aged 78, and was buried in Abilene. This memorial presents documented episodes from his life rather than personal eyewitness memories.
